5 Tips to Motivate you to Exercise

Exercise …. Love it or hate it, we all know it’s good for us!

We’ve heard it can make us feel happy, we’ve heard it can improve our health as well as our self-esteem, we’ve heard it can give us an energy boost, help us to sleep better etc etc … yes we want all of this, now if only we could motivate ourselves to get started or to “stick to the plan” …..

I often get asked about my fitness routine, how I find the time to exercise and what motivates me to keep going. I took some time to think about the latter and came up with a few ideas for those of you that struggle to get excited about fitness and to stay on track if and when you do start.

Here are 5 tips that may help you ..

1. Pick an exercise buddy

When starting out, it’s always good to pick a buddy – someone on your same wavelength. You can encourage each other plus you won’t want to let each other down. Basically, it’s more likely you’ll make the session if someone is relying on you to be there.

2. Try something new

If running or class ‘x’ just doesn’t do it for you – don’t give up. Try something new! There are so many different classes available nowadays, be adventurous … try Yoga, try Pilates, try HIIT, try Boxing …. not all of them may be for you but you will never know until you try. You will fall in love with, at least, one along the way and you will be so happy that you gave it a chance in the first place.

3. Buy new workout gear

Once you settle on a class you like, treat yourself to some trendy gear. If you look the part you will feel more confident to give it a proper go! Look good, feel good – simple!

4. Track your progress

Yes! Take that cheesy selfie in your work out gear at the beginning of your journey and then take a few along the way … start to notice the changes in your body – be proud of your progress! And, as my yoga teacher always says, “acknowledge your efforts and be thankful for what you have managed to accomplish” at each and every session.

5. Set yourself a challenge

Some people are more driven when given something to work towards. If this rings true to you, then set yourself a challenge – why not enter a race or a competition of sorts. There are so many of them going on in Malta. Start small and perhaps you’ll enjoy it and want to work towards something bigger at a later stage.

And to conclude, don’t expect the first session to be easy either. It’s going to burn and you will feel sore …. don’t let this stop you! The first couple of weeks will be tough but once you settle into a routine, you will start to reap the benefits.
