My Top 3 Superfood Blends (plus 1 for the kids)

Superfoods are great but you know what’s even better? Superfood Blends! That’s right, someone’s worked out the most effective combinations of superfoods to target your every need. How very convenient!

SHINE mixes are the perfect example. These organic mixes are free from gluten, contain no added sugar and guarantee pure plant power. There’s a range of 7 blends, all clearly labelled as to what super-power they possess, prettily packaged and ready for you to use.

After long deliberation, I have decided that these are my favourite of the bunch …

Presenting the cleansing crew; Wheatgrass, Barleygrass, Nettle, Chlorella, Matcha and Lucuma. Some seriously powerful ingredients high in Vitamin B2, Choline and Iron right there.

Feeling like crap? Need to give your immune system a boost whilst giving your body a good spring clean? Calling all greens (and Lucuma) to the rescue! I like to make this cleansing juice for Cass and myself at least once a week, usually on a Monday, post weekend shenanigans. Unlike most detox juices this one tastes really good, scouts honour!

Green Detox Juice – (Makes 1 juice)

  • 1 apple
  • 1/2 cup frozen or fresh pineapple
  • bunch of celery
  • 1 cup cucumber
  • 1 teaspoon CLEANSE blend

(Feed all ingredients into a juicer then simply add a teaspoon of Cleanse blend, mix and serve)

Pre-gym essential in my book! Love this blend especially because of the Guarana inside. Ditch the coffee before hitting your workout and replace with Guarana, a natural stimulant which provides long lasting energy without crashing. Now pair this with Maca which is also known for boosting energy and combating fatigue and you’ve got yourself a winner! It doesn’t stop there though, this blend also contains Amaranth, Teff, Milled Chia Seeds, Lucuma and Carob.

Not only does it work well as pre-gym fuel, I also turn to this blend when I feel like I’ve run out of steam. Think afternoon, when you’d love to plonk yourself on the couch and rest for just 10 minutes but you have after-school activities to taxi your kids to, homework to help with or dinner to prepare. Pop yourself a pick me up (recipe below) fuelled with Stamina and you’re good to go.

Pick Me Ups – (Makes 22 pieces)

  • 100g cashews
  • 100g oats
  • 7 medjool dates (pitted)
  • 2 teaspoons STAMINA blend
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter
  • 2 tablespoons water

(Cashews and oats in food processor for a minute or so. Add the rest of the ingredients to the processor and process until a sticky dough is formed. Roll into balls, freeze for 5 minutes and then store in an airtight container in the fridge.)

Protein +

If you’re a fitness freak like me, you’ll love this one for post-gym recovery. Apparently, it is recommended you consume an adequate amount of protein very soon after a workout – it will give your body the amino acids it needs to repair and rebuild muscle protein. This blend has got you covered with ingredients like Hemp protein and Pea protein. It also contains Amaranth, Milled chia seeds, Spirulina, Moringa leaf and Cacao.

If you train early in the morning, I recommend having these overnight proats (recipe below) just after. Not only will they help maintain your muscle but they will also have you feeling full till lunchtime.

Overnight Proats – (Makes 2 portions)

  • 1 cup frozen mango
  • 1 banana
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 teaspoon PROTEIN + blend
  • 1 cup oats
  • 2 dollops yoghurt of choice
  • Fresh mango and banana slices
  • Sprinkle of chia seeds

(Blend mango, banana, milk, protein+ until smooth. Pour into two containers, add oats to each and mix. Refrigerate for a few hours or overnight and then top with fresh fruit, yoghurt and a sprinkling of chia seeds)

Technically this is one that my kids love so by default it makes the cut. This brainy blend is rich in Magnesium, Selenium, Iron and Zinc. That’s right, this one’s especially designed to nourish your brain! (A good one for exam season perhaps?) Wisdom’s secret formula is composed of Milled Chia Seeds, Amaranth, Lucuma, Banana Powder, Maca, Cacao and Carob.

My kids LOVE having this smoothie for breakfast. They’ve even named it their favourite!

“School tiiiiime .. our brain needs a power-up” they tell me as they walk into the kitchen, far too enthusiastic and energetic for my liking (I’m not a morning person!) but obviously I oblige …

Brain Booster – (Makes 2 portions)

  • 1 cup frozen bio strawberries
  • 1 banana
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon WISDOM blend
  • 125ml milk of choice

(Blend until smooth and serve)

…. for that smile, I’d do anything really 😉
